The Detroit Institute of Arts is home to one of the most significant collections of puppets in the country, largely due to a gift from the family of Michigan-based puppeteer and puppet collector Paul McPharlin in 1951. Using examples from the museum's 800 puppets and more than 700 related back drops and props, author John Bell traces the changing role of puppetry over the course of three centuries.

Although the 20th century has focused its attention on puppets as children's entertainment, Bell illustrates, through engaging text and colorful images, puppetry's function in everything from vaudeville-style entertainment to serious theater. Bell also explores the cross-cultural influences of Asian, European, North and South American, and African puppet traditions on each other.
